Realizing you suck

I know it sounds counterintuitive to say it, but sometimes you have to realize that you probably suck.

It sounds harsh and it sounds like a negative voice in your head, but you need to realize that there are some parts in your life, or character, that might be lacking. This self realization is needed in order for you to find out where you need to get better. You need to identify where your weak points are in order for you to get stronger, and to get past the sugar coating, you need to be a little harder than usual.

I’m not saying to come crashing down on yourself. But an honest look might be needed to spark that next chapter or inspire that next great leap. There have been many times that I’ve looked at myself and found things I wasn’t happy about. But the trick here is to not obsess about things you can’t control and to still give yourself some room for error. Be critical enough to look past the surface, but still love yourself so you don’t tear yourself down.

Take account of the things you might not like, or where you want to improve. Guitar skills are lacking? Try and learn a new song or technique. Self confidence going down and self image fading fast? Try a new restaurant and take on the special of the day. Take a dance lesson and introduce yourself to a few new people. The lesson here isn’t to belittle ourselves or be overly self critical. It’s about identifying the places we want to improve and being honest with ourselves that we might not be as good as we think. It’s about being humble enough to realize you might not be the best, or even half as good as you thought you once were.
